Topic: from AU Pres Jay Gogue

Obviously Gogue is anti-tuition cap, but he does support getting the $236M to PACT. I hope our legislators at least get this amount moved over. At a minimum this will buy time to consider more options* while our courts mandate guarantees to be paid.

Gogue's thoughts

* I tried not to bring up the Trust Fund again, and I thought I could do it but just couldn't, so I've edited my original message just in case any of our legislators are lurking. The best, and perhaps only, option to fully fund PACT before costly lawsuits start to arise is to tap the Trust Fund. Certainly if $1B is available for infrastructure (as proposed by one of your peers) then some of this could first be allcoated to PACT to fund existing legal obligations before road paving begins. Or, if you don't want to directly tap the existing funds, then you could divert future O&G royalties to PACT until funded. That harms no one. Thanks for your attention, and good luck.

Re: from AU Pres Jay Gogue

I just read what Dr. Gogue had to say and he is making it sound like the non PACT students will have to pay even more to make up for the PACT students.  This is misleading. They have raised the tuition enough in the last 10 years to last at least 10 more years before another increase should be due.  They are using this as an excuse to raise tuition even higher. I am sure the University of Alabama and UAB are doing the same too.  I read in the B'ham News where the Auburn Trustees are proposing a 14% increase for next year.  Maybe they are just trying to get a head start on the PACT students!!???

Re: from AU Pres Jay Gogue

I read the following at the end of an article about Auburn's tuition increase (today in the Huntsville Times):

"In other business the trustees voted to study the possibility of building a campus in Danyang, China.  Larry Benefield, dean of engineering, told the board that Auburn engineering Professor C. T. Liu, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, will work with Chinese officials to develop a proposal.

In materials submitted to the board, Benefield said Danyang has a strong interest in high technology and establishing a campus there would help Auburn attract Chinese students and build its alumni base."

This makes me want to scream!  EEEEK!!!  They can build an Auburn campus in China, but not give us a break!  Not to mention the risk of our technology getting into Chinese hands.  Makes me want to say bad words!
