I'd also like to thank Patti and Rebecca for being present at the Madison County meeting. Your input was so informative and very much appreciated.
Many thanks to Donna Peacher for organizing today's meeting and to Chuck for agreeing to Captain future meetings. I was having some difficulty hearing or just wasn't paying attention at the right time so I didn't get the new Captain's full name or email address. I'd really appreciate if someone would post that information.
My hope is that SaveAlabamaPACT will be a positive example in the state of Alabama as well as looking out for the best interests of PACT holders.
About out-of-state tuition payments...my daughter went to an out of state school her first year. PACT only pays the average tuition of Alabama schools for out of state students. I don't have the exact amount handy but the tuition PACT paid for us to that university was a very small amount compared to what it pays now at Auburn. They saved a lot of money on her that year by paying so much less.
As far as "personal responsibility" goes, tenrocdoc says it all well. And I've already gone off on another thread here where someone did the "you're stupid and inferior for trusting PACT" thing, so I won't do it again. But I do believe Alabama government will never improve as long as its citizens are happy to look the other way when they're not the people who were wronged.
I agree that this is an obligation of the state. It's so incredible that Marc Reynolds told Ms. Peacher and others that "YOU need to think of some kind" of funding for this. What we do need to be aware of, however, is that we don't want some legislator or politician to go off half-cocked and try to do something that would doom the program. I've read here how a lottery and tax increases are very divisive issues so we may or may not want to see them linked to PACT. So while it is not our job to find money, we really need to be vigilant that someone doesn't try to pull something we believe will fail and ruin the the program. We need to be prepared to protect PACT if we think something is being considered that is not in it's best interest.
AlabamaParent,
I've remained quiet when reading "You're so stupid" comments from people who don't have PACTS to people FOR WHOM THIS FORUM WAS CREATED, meaning NOT YOU! To suggest that because we bought into PACTS we are somehow inferior and don't deserve any consideration from those who created this mess is just you and others of your ilk running scared, refusing to believe some children deserve something you don't have. "Buyer beware applies to government programs" has probably been the case at times. But just because it has happened before doesn't mean it was right then and it doesn't mean it's right now; and I've never seen any laws stating that's the way it ought to be (and don't bother trying to show me any that you think do so. That would be somewhat undignified.) After reading the comments from RSA, I'm not in the mood to hear, "tsk, tsk, tsk, you foolish people who would trust the highest levels of state government." Similar programs exist around the country that have been successful. There's no good reason why this one should not have been. And, yes, it is the responsibility of those who created it to fix it and show some semblance of honor and integrity. For those who aren't involved with PACT just know that if your elected officials did it then your state did it. And we, all of us, are the state. I honestly believe you need to stop worrying about some pennies in your pocket and think more about how to make the state of Alabama a place to live where the government does the right thing. In this case "the right thing" means not depriving 48,000 children a college education they paid for.
Did anyone see the Channel 19 News at 10:00 last night where someone was asking someone else about PACT? I only saw the promo and missed the story. I don't know who the people were.
Has anyone had any luck obtaining a list of PACT holders using the Freedom of Information Act? It seems I remember seeing someone posting on this website somewhere that requests have been made. In the meantime, if there is a master list of email addresses that can be used to request locations it sounds like a good idea.
Hi, sugarcat and bebobear! He means for you to go to the thread that's called "PACT Participant location" and leave a post there because they're trying to organize people by where they live. Thanks!
Didn't see any new activity on here so thought I should say something! No, really, I want to thank Donna Peacher for her efforts to gather together all the PACT holders in Madison County. I know there's got to be a lot. I urge everyone to make contact either through this website or Facebook so the area leaders can get in touch with you. I'm asking people if they're PACT holders so I can let them know what's going on. I believe this is something that if we all have a way of getting together through email or whatever to share information we can keep an eye on what's happening with the PACT situation and really make a difference. Thank you to all the others who have also worked so hard to try to organize everyone.

I want to say thank you to everyone who turns out for the meetings today and a special big thank you to all the organizers. It simply was not possible for me to be there today. But this is definitely not the end and I have a feeling there will be be plenty more meetings and much work to day that I will be able to attend in the future. I'm looking forward to hearing feedback about everything that went on in Montgomery today. I hope a lot of it will be posted because I really wanted to be there. And..."No PACT contract left behind!"
Is the board committed to honoring PACT payments through spring 2010?
What is happening with the fund right now?
Is the board committed to working with RSA to make the fund healthy again?
I'm sorry but from all the comments I've read that have been posted with internet articles about PACT I do not believe a constitutional amendment would pass and it's not the answer.
I'm right there with you, Kitty Collier. This whole debacle has been too slimey from the very beginning. I repeat bamall, "THERE IS NO REASON TO DISSOLVE PACT NOW AND NO REASON TUITION SHOULD NOT BE PAID THIS FALL AND SRING UNTIL LEGISLATION IS PASSED." It's quite possible by that time the fund could be turned around and be healthy as a horse. Where is this fund we've all paid into? What's being done with it right now to get it back on track. Who's managing it? Hopefully not the same economic idiots who lost almost half of it to begin with! And what I'd really like to know is exactly how much has been paid out to who for what in the name of "management fees?" Forgive my ranting, but I feel like the victim of one of the biggest scams ever pulled off by an Alabama politician and at the expense of my daughter's education. I believe if there's anything we PACT holders want it's to get our fund into the hands of people who know what they're doing with proper oversight and stop all this nonsense.
Thank you,
and may the good Lord take a likin' to ya
Auburn shouldn't have any problem with tuition freezes for PACT members. My daughter's tuition is already frozen. When they had their last tuition increase they froze the tuition at the current rate for students already attending. Plus they get a great deal when they don't allow the students in the classes they need for graduation and so they end up taking random classes they don't need (and paid by PACT) just so they can be considered full-time. That has happened to my daughter all but two semesters. In the fall they were only going to allow her THREE hours that she needed and the dept. head finally agreed to let her in two more classes but she still had to take an unneeded class to be full-time. It's important for her to be a full-time student so she can remain under our insurance for several medical issues. Because of the unavailability of classes she will be at Auburn two extra semesters. So there should be many PACT participants who already have their tuition froze.
The University of Alabama System Legislative Update, dated April 16, 2009, urges everyone in their system to call the Senators immediately to OPPOSE Senate Bill 581. The newsletter states "SB 581 imposes Legislatively-mandated tuition freezes on our campuses that would cripple our ability to serve our students and our State." It goes on to state they have already had a $117 million cut in the past 11 months and that a freeze would "negatively impact our campus bond ratings." (www.uasystem.ua.edu/) That means a lot of opposition to this bill, unfortunately. There's a good chance we PACT holders may not be able to rely on this kind of legislation to get what we were guaranteed. Finding a way to let RSA administer the program sounds good if they can get something that will pass and provide what we signed up for.
