Topic: Commitment to PACT families

Hello,

I can only imagine the number of promises PACT families have heard or read over the last six months, regarding the future of PACT. As you know, regardless  of what I or any other candidate tells you, the future of PACT will be decided by Alabama's legislature.

Today, I declared my candidacy for the 2010 Alabama Treasurer's race. I give you my personal commitment that I will make all efforts in my power to ensure that Alabama honors its commitments made, and later implied, in the PACT agreements you signed. As an attorney, I fully appreciate that within PACT contracts there existed explicit or implied promises for guaranteed tuition payments. I believe in government that honors its promises, even when it isn't convenient.

The future of PACT likely cannot be salvaged. Over the course of my campaign, you will hear me discuss the future of PACT - likely, one that involves its melting into the Alabama Higher Education 529. But, I assure you, I will aggressively fight for the honoring of PACT contacts. Meaning, when your children are due to enter college, I advocate Alabama supplementing any difference between the cost of tuition and the amount which is invested in your college savings plan  - which, at that point will likely be a AL Higher Ed 529 account.

I would appreciate hearing your thoughts and criticism, so we might craft the most amenable and effective solution towards bringing the crisis within PACT to a close.
