Senator Preuitt does not WANT TO BE CONFUSED WITH FACTS.

Well, if I only suspected that he was not totally behind a solution for the PACT problem; I have no doubt now that he is only half heartedly supporting us.

I ask him to support all the PACT bills. He reminded me that the senate bill had passed and was in the house. I explained that the house had passed 3 bills that were now in the senate for action. I ask him to especially support HB228 as it would be a lasting solution. He said that he did not think they could get away with telling the colleges and universities how much they could charge. I told him that the state had gotten away with telling them how much they could charge out of state students within a 50 mile radius of the schools so I did not think it is a problem to tell them to cap tuition for some of our own Alabama citizens whose parents and grand parents had participated in a State program to prepay tuition. He kept repeating that we could not tell then what to charge even after I had given him this fact. He said we do not know how much it cost to run the schools. I reminded him that they got money every year in the states budget and they were
state chartered and they need to be good citizens and help with the problem. He repeated again his opposition to telling them what they could charge not knowing how much it would hurt them, I started to giving him the information about them being helped by the PACT and the yearly amount that would be the maximum that Alabama and Auburn would lose to the cap. He interrupted me and said that he would only vote for the bill without the cap. I reminded him that without the cap the funds would not last to the end of the program. He told me they would last as far as they went and told me again that he would not vote for the Cap and said he did not know where they were getting the 260 million dollars anyway. I told he exactly where the funds were coming from. He said he knew that it was coming from the interest from the trust fund but we were already in proration. I told him that these funds were not going to affect proration either way and started to give
him some more facts and he blurted out “thank you for calling” and hung up on me.

We have had great support from the Lt. Gov's office but strange to me, where has Gov. Bob Riley weighed in? Haven't heard anything from him that I can find since the PACT board meeting on March 24, 2009.

Can anyone find Gov. Riley for us?

As for Holmes, you really don't want to hear me expound on my thoughts of Holmes. I really meant that I will do everything in my power to see that he gets defeated next election. I need to find out when he will next be running. Anyone know?

We are so disappointed and disgusted with the Alabama legislators and with Alvin Holmes in particular.

Yet Another Proposal

From Montgomery Advertiser 4-9-09

2 Alabama lawmakers make proposal to save prepaid tuition program

Two Republican legislators are working on a plan to shore up Alabama's financially troubled prepaid college tuition program without using state tax dollars.

Sen. Scott Beason of Gardendale and Rep. Robert Bentley of Tuscaloosa said their plan would move the tuition program's assets from the stock market to an annuity.

They also propose doing away with a state law that allows out-of-state students living within 50 miles of an Alabama college to pay in-state tuition. They say that would generate $25 million annually in higher tuition payments that would go toward the tuition program.

They also propose requiring out-of-state students to pay the full cost of their education at a state university. That extra money would also go toward the tuition plan.

Senator Steve French NON-SUPPORTIVE (Jefferson/Shelby County)

Based on the following email response from Senator Steve French (15th District of Alabama (Jefferson and Shelby Counties) to my email request regarding his support of legislation to save PACT, I am listing him as non-supportive. Senator French's response was,

"The State Treasurer and the Board are working on this. Hopefully, they can
get money from somewhere to take care of this." This is way to non-commital to me so I am listing him as NON-SUPPORTIVE.

I have emailed him with this website address and informed him that should he clearly state his support for PACT legislation, then he will be listed as SUPPORTIVE.

I think publishing a list of those who are SUPPORTIVE and those who are NON-SUPPORTIVE is the best way we measure our progress. I can only imagine that legislators will cringe when they see their names as NON-SUPPORTIVE. Please send your legislators a link to the website so they can see where we have them listed! Legislators should only be listed as SUPPORTIVE if they have made a CONCRETE statement of support for SAVING PACT . . . . nothing less! Thanks to the creators of this website.
