Save Alabama PACT Position Statement

January 23, 2010

The grassroots organization Save Alabama PACT supports legislator’s in their efforts to provide legislative funding for the Alabama PACT program deficits. Senator Ted Little, along with Rep. Greg Wren, Rep. Craig Ford, and other legislators have stepped out in front to get the legislative process moving toward a solution in 2010. We believe each has unique merits that should be strongly considered by the body of the legislature, structured and passed in this session. A solution is at hand.

We also sincerely appreciate the efforts of Dr. Paul Hubbert, AEA Executive Secretary, for showing his support for the use of potential Education Trust Fund dollars as part of a total solution for PACT. We believe that Dr. Hubbert is sincere in his convictions and assessment, and with such support should come fiscal responsibility by the PACT Board of Directors and the higher education system in Alabama should come on board to lend their critically needed support at never a more appropriate time.  For by voluntarily holding tuitions at a reasonable level to allow PACT to recover, they become part of a cooperative solution to fulfill the promise that the Alabama PACT program has given to so many Alabama children.

We leave it to the Legislature of the State of Alabama and their wisdom, during this 2010 session to find the appropriate course, but we continue to encourage and challenge them to solve the problem now because simply 45,000 children are waiting for a solution to a problem that will not just go away.
